Atkins, South Beach, Weight Watchers, Keto…the list goes on and on. Whether you or someone you know is dieting, you have probably heard of one of the diets listed above, but have you heard of the Mediterranean Diet? As your audiologist, we know the link between hearing loss and cognition, and understand how important it is to our patients to slow the process of cognitive decline. Studies, such as one from the Sense-Cog project, have shown a reduction in the rate of cognitive decline following treatment of hearing loss, but did you know your diet may have an impact as well? The Mediterranean Diet consists of eating whole fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, legumes, fish, and olive olive, as well as reducing consumption of red meat and alcohol. According to a recent study in Alzheimer’s and Dementia (bit.ly/diet-cog-decline), this diet may protect against cognitive impairment. It was found that the diet correlated not only to higher cognitive function, but was also linked with the overall slowing of cognitive decline. As research in this area and others relating to cognitive function continue, we will update you. If you have any questions about how your hearing loss impacts your cognitive function, please call and schedule an appointment today.
