As the Coronavirus spreads across the nation, measures are being taken to minimize its impact. “Social distancing” is one of the recommended measures. It involves the cancellation of many large events and gatherings as well as intentionally increasing the physical space between people in order to avoid spreading the illness. Those with untreated hearing loss tend to follow a variation of this concept in their everyday life, due to the effort required to listen and participate in social gatherings. When a person with untreated hearing loss decides that they no longer want to put forth the effort in those very challenging social environments, they withdraw from the situation (“social distancing”). This withdrawal can greatly impact a person’s life. Family and friends may misunderstand and feel that the person is depressed or not interested because of their lack of communication. Over time, the person may become depressed due to their social isolation. While practicing “social distancing” during this epidemic is essential, it may produce many negative side effects for those with untreated hearing loss, who practice it for an extended period. If you or anyone you know, exhibits these qualities, excluding measures to minimize the impact of the Coronavirus, please contact our office to discuss ways to improve hearing and communication in those situations.
